School Sports
RAFFAELLO BANIN, PIEDMONT, CALIFORNIA
This summer I was in Italy for vacation. I became friends with a group of kids going into or already in high school. As we shared stories about the sports we played, I asked them what sports they were going to play in high school. I was very surprised to find out that school sports were only an American thing! I realized that in America the sport you do defines who you are.
It is like a first impression or reading of a person. And the more popular the sport they play the more cool they are considered. I wonder whether this is the reason for the obsession that we have in school for who is popular and who is not, which appears to be a purely American issue. I wish that we could become friends for who we truly are and not on how we spend our time.
